Researchers in Hawaii have made great strides in studying the biological and chemical factors that determine why some workers exposed to asbestos get sick and others do not.

Their findings open a whole new area of research, because other cancers could be caused by the interaction of these factors.

The exposure of workers in Hawaii has been significant over the years. Over 10,000 workers have been exposed to asbestos at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard since World War II, as well as at construction sites throughout the state.
